864 -Contributory Aged Parent Visa ( Permanent)

This permanent visa lets an aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay in Australia.

What is an aged parent?

An aged parent in someone that is old enough to receive the age pension in Australia. The Department of Social Services defines the age pension which is currently 66 years and six months and will increase to 67 years on the 1st of July 2023.

Similar, to the Contributory 143 visa, this visa also requires significant contribution in visa fees.  The key difference is this visa is an onshore visa that allows parents to stay in Australia whilst the visa is processing.

This onshore permanent visa lets an aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay in Australia.

The key criteria for this visa include:

  • be old enough to receive the age pension
  • have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • meet the balance of family test
    • At least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or
    • More of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country
  • have an eligible sponsor
  • have an Assurance of Support
  • meet health and character test
  • not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa

Mirroring ‘Contributory’ 143 visa fees, start from $47,825 per applicant and with a 10 year Assurance of Support for $10-14k per applicant or a set of parents, this visa requires significant investment. Processing of Contributory visa applications when they were first introduced took much less time, however with increased demand for these visas, the Department of Home Affairs has reported new Contributory Parent visa applications lodged that meet the criteria to be queued are likely to take at least 65 months to be released for final processing.
