Australian employers experiencing skills shortages, that cannot be filled by suitable Australian workers, can seek to recruit these positions with foreign employees using various temporary and permanent visa options.

The National Skills Commission periodically provides advice to the Australian Government regarding skills gaps in the Australian labour market. Australia’s skills-related migration visas are underpinned by the following lists, which combine to form the Skilled Migration Occupation List:

  • Short-Term Skilled Occupation List
  • Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List
  • Regional Occupation List.

These lists are used to guide employers of occupations in demand, that they can use to nominate and sponsor foreign candidates for available visa pathways.

Employers have options of both temporary and permanent visa solutions:

EMPLOYER SPONSORED - TEMPORARY WORK VISAS

482- Temporary Skills Shortage Visa (TSS Visa)

This is a temporary visa that employers can use to fill skills gaps from occupations on  specified skills lists.  Depending on the stream visa applicants can have pathways to permanent residency. This visa is granted for 2 or 4 years.

400 - Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa

This visa allows employers to utilise offshore highly specialised recruits for short term non-ongoing projects for a period of up to 6 months.

494 - Skilled Employer Regional (Provisional) visa

This is a provisional visa for employers in regional areas wanting to attract foreign labour.  This visa is a provisional 5 year visa which has pathways to permanent residency making it an attractive visa to migrants.

407 - Training Visa

This visa allows foreign workers to take part in Australian workplace-based training to improve their skills for their job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise or in a professional development training program in Australia

EMPLOYER SPONSORED - PERMANENT WORK VISA

Employers can sponsor international candidates for permanent visas using the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS).

The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) provides permanent residency to migrants who are already in Australia working as temporary residents and those living outside Australia equipped with the desired skill sets that are in demand in Australia

The ENS visa scheme has three visa streams:

Direct Entry Scheme

Employees from aboard directly granted permanent sponsored work visas.

Labour Market Stream

Specialised Labour Market Agreements between the Australian government and employers in various sectors of the labour market, unable to secure employees using other schemes.

Temporary Residence Transition Scheme

Permanent pathways for temporary workers in Australia.
