Visa applicants need to invest a significant amount of least AUD 5 million in Australian investments meeting certain requirements and maintain this investment activity in Australia for the period of the visa.

Key requirements of this stream include:

  • Nomination by a State or Territory Government
  • Invest $5 million AUD in complying significant investments*
  • Must not have a history of involvement in unacceptable activities
  • Have functional English (or pay 2nd VAC)
  • Meet Health and character requirement
  • Not have a previous visa refusal or cancellation

*Complying Significant Investment

Post 1 July 2021 the 5 million complying significant investment need to be invested in the following proportions:

  • at least AUD1 million in venture capital and growth private equity funds which invest in start-ups and small private companies
  • at least AUD1.5 million in approved managed funds. The managed funds must invest in emerging companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange
  • a ‘balancing investment’ of at least AUD2.5 million in managed funds

The managed funds can invest in a range of assets, including companies listed on the Australian stock exchange, Australian corporate bonds or notes, annuities and commercial real estate.

Direct investment in residential real estate is prohibited. Indirect investment in residential property through managed funds is strictly limited.


The next step from the Provisional Investment stream is this permanent visa 888 Significant Investor Stream. 

Key criteria for the Provisional Significant Investor to Permanent stream include:

  • Confirmation of current nomination by a State or Territory Government
  • Continued to have held complying significant investments of AUD $5 million for a continuous period of 4 or more years
  • Have been physically present in Australia for a cumulative period of 40 days each year by the primary applicant or 180 days by the secondary applicant
  • Not involved in unacceptable business or investment activities.
  • Commitment to continuing business activities in Australia
  • Meet health and character requirement
  • Not have a previous visa refusal or cancellation

Upon meeting all visa requirements applicants obtain permanent residency and if eligible can apply for Australian citizenship.
